Beta-casomorphin-7 (BCM-7) is a peptide that can affect cells in a number of ways, including:
- Binding to opioid receptorsBCM-7 is a bioactive peptide that binds to and activates the μ-opioid receptor, which is found in the immune system, gastrointestinal tract, and other parts of the body.
- Disrupting insulin transmissionBCM-7 can disrupt the regulation of insulin hormone transmission, which can impact metabolic processes related to insulin.
- Preventing cysteine amino acid uptakeBCM-7 binds to the excitatory amino acid transporter 3 (EAAT3) carrier, which prevents the uptake of cysteine amino acids into the cell. This hinders the production of glutathione (GSH), which protects cells from stress. A decrease in GSH levels could potentially lead to the development of neurodegenerative diseases.
- Inducing ferroptosis in pancreatic beta-cellsBCM-7 can induce non-apoptotic, iron-dependent ferroptosis in the beta-cells of the pancreas.
- Altering glucose distributionBCM-7 can influence the overall distribution of glucose in the body.
Some studies suggest that BCM-7 may be a risk factor for developing human diseases, including type 1 diabetes and cardiovascular diseases. However, research studies have not thoroughly substantiated this.
