E. coli AVB101

• Purpose: This E. coli strain is engineered to efficiently biotinylate proteins in vivo (within the living organism). Biotinylation is the process of attaching biotin (vitamin B7) to a protein. This is a useful technique in biochemistry and molecular biology for various applications, such as protein purification, detection, and interaction studies.

• How it works:

  • AVB101 carries a plasmid (a small circular DNA molecule) with a gene called birA. This gene encodes biotin ligase, an enzyme that attaches biotin to specific target sequences called Avi-tags.

  • Researchers introduce a gene encoding their protein of interest with an Avi-tag into AVB101.

  • When AVB101 grows, it produces both the protein of interest and biotin ligase, leading to the biotinylation of the target protein.
